There are some places not meant to be visited. You pass by, but never stop to go in. Neither does anyone else. The Lights are on, but there never seem to be people inside. You might see someone cleaning occasionally, or possibly a car in the parking lot, but where are the people?
Look Away is an ongoing photo project I started in March of this year to photograph places I find uneasy and to add a sense of mystery to places I see every day. This work is inspired by The Backrooms, a creepypasta posted online in 2018 that sparked my interest for liminal spaces. Really they’re just empty spaces, but they bring a sense of insecurity and danger that I wanted to explore in my own work. This book is a collection of some of the spaces that I found myself unnerved while photographing, and uneasy when going back and looking them over. The physical book has two covers; the inner cover is one of the photos from the collection, and the jacket is frosted vellum to blur the photo and just show the colors, which to me are the strangest part of all of the photographs. This work is best enjoyed while listening to Stage 6 of The Caretaker’s Everywhere at the End of Time.
